When a classic frame is the right choice
A traditional oil painting often looks unfinished in a thin modern frame. The same goes for old maps, family portraits and mirrors. A frame with depth and carved detail gives the eye somewhere to travel before it reaches the work, and it holds its own in a room with period furniture or high ceilings.

Choosing well
The best way to judge an ornate frame is against the actual piece. Gold can warm a painting or overwhelm it, and a heavy profile that looks perfect on a wall of samples may be too much for a small work. Bring the piece in and try the corners against it.
